Hello my friends.

A guaranteed way to increase your profit is to sell a great product.

One morning while on holiday, my son Nicholas and I woke up at 5:30 am so that we could go down to the pier and watch the fishing fleet returning with their daily catch. Early morning is in my opinion the best time of the day. The air is crisp and fresh, the sky has a magical pinkish hue as it prepares to reveal a new sunrise, and all manner of creatures regale us with their singing.

This particular morning was perfect. Nicholas and I watched as the boats rolled in. Next, a hive of activity  began on board each vessel as soon as it was moored. Dozen of crates of freshly caught prawns, snapper, flathead and squid began being unloaded.

While we waited I saw someone with a cup of shop bought coffee crossing the street. “Hmm” I thought, “that’s a good idea. I’ll surprise Isabella with a nice coffee”.

We walked across the street to the nearest coffee shop and ordered two “strong” capuchinos and two hot chocolates; one for Nicholas and one for my daughter Jessica.

As usual I started chatting with the owners who turned out to be a husband and wife.

“I hear we are going to have another hot one today. Should be good for your business. Drinks and ice creams should be flying out of your door”, I said.

“I hope so”,  the woman making our drinks said wistfully.

“Unfortunately we don’t get much of the beach traffic”, said her husband, “they usually go down to the other cafes further down the street”.

At this point another customer walked in and our conversation stopped.

A few minutes later our drinks were ready and we drove back to our vacation home. I felt very pleased with myself for arranging my morning surprise. Isabella and I sat down to enjoy our coffees. Our first  sip however, proved far from satisfying.

“What do you think of the coffee” I asked.

“It tastes like bad instant coffee” replied Isabella.

The cafe’s owners had the mistaken belief that business was bad because of their poor location. However, their two competitors were less than one hundred metres away!

This made them feel helpless. They felt that because they couldn’t physically change their location, there wasn’t anything they could do to improve.

The reality was that their coffee was terrible. In my opinion anyone who tried their coffee once would never return. No wonder they weren’t attracting any customers from their competitors.

There is a statement attributed to the great thinker Ralph Waldo Emerson that reads as follows:

“If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mousetrap, than his neighbor, though he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door.”

The message in this statement is incredibly powerful and I insist you memorise it.
