Satisfying Customers Isn’t Good Enough. You Have To Delight Them.

February 9, 2012

You’ve got a problem if your customers aren’t leaving your shop with a smile on their face.

My local butcher -now retired- was a Superstar at delighting his customers. Every time I shopped for meat he would ask me what I was cooking. If the cut I was ordering wasn’t perfect for my dish he would tell me which one was and give me advice on cooking time and temperature.

When I was cooking a barbeque he would ask me if I had tried a particular flavour of sausage and if I said that I hadn’t he would give me three or for to try for free.

Every time I stepped in to his shop he used my name; even when he was with another customer.

Whenever my wife Isabella shopped he always opened the door for her as he said good-bye.

My favourite thing he did was for children.

When parents were leaving with their children he always offered the children a Chupa Chup – that’s a lollipop but……it’s one of the good ones.

Then he asked the children if they wanted to ring the bell, like the one in the picture, which was hung on the wall next to the front door. Every time a child rang the bell all the butchers behind the counter stopped what they were doing and shouted out YOOOO!

Every parent and child got a huge kick out of this performance.

What are you doing to delight your customers?

Do you need some help to come up with a weird and wonderful way to delight your customers?

What are you waiting for?

P.S.  I’m on the lookout for a new butcher now that my old mate has retired.
