The Law of Consistency

The level of consistency is one of the fundamental reasons why some retailers  prosper and others struggle.

Your job is to identify where you need to be consistent in your business and then make it so.

Consistency makes you money, guaranteed!

 

The law of consistency in regards to retailing means that:

1. You must identify the areas of your business where you can stand out from your competition and develop your brand.

2. Once you have a solid brand you will need to  be vigilant in everything you do to ensure that your brand is consistent every time. Great brands are not born over night so the more consistent you are the more your brand will stick in the minds of consumers.

3. Continuous improvent. Don’t rest on your early successes or your competition will overtake you. Keep seeking out more and better ways to enthuse your customers and perform these consistently too.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

In an earlier article 678% sales increase in only three weeks, I told you about a program I implemented while working as an apparel store manager.

You can read the whole article yourself, but in brief:

I had identified that my store sold 1 belt for every 20 trousers that were sold.

After devising and rehearsing a suitable customer approach, one with fun, enthusiasm and respect towards our customers and gaining commitment from all staff, belt sales increased to 1 for every three trousers sold and consistently remained at that level.

“Do you want fries with that?” helps Mcdonald’s sell millions more fries each year.

Speaking of Mcdonald’s, the chain is renowned for its clean toilets and for years has become the must go to destination when you are on the road and  you just have to go. Do you believe Mcdonald’s effort to consistently maintain clean toilets adds to their bottom line? You bet it does.

Consistency isn’t important only in up-selling or clean toilets. It has to be applied across every area of your business. 

Sometimes what will seem like the smallest thing to you will make the biggest difference to your customers.
