Growth In Retail Sales

July 6, 2012

Here’s some good news from the Australian Bureau of Statistics to get you pumped up for this weekend’s trading.

REMEMBER,  keep focussed on the fundamentals and watch your profit grow!

Australian retail turnover rose 0.5 per cent in May – five times the previous month’s rate and the strongest since June 2010.

The all important barometer of year on year sales improvement is 3.3 per cent.
The ABS says the majority of industries recorded a rise in May, with cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (1.4 per cent) and household goods retailing (0.8 per cent) the main drivers of the growth. Other retailing (0.7 per cent), department stores and clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (0.5 per cent) also rose.
Food retailing was down slightly (-0.1 per cent) reflecting ongoing deflation in the grocery market. It was the only industry to fall in May, in seasonally adjusted terms.
Over the longer term food retailing is still the main contributor to growth (up 0.4 per cent in trend terms) along with cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (up one per cent in trend terms).
From a state perspective NSW (0.7 per cent) recorded its third consecutive monthly rise, while WA (1.1 per cent) was also up and remains the strongest performing state over the longer term (up 0.7 per cent in trend terms). Victoria (0.5 per cent), Queensland (0.5 per cent) and the NT (1.6 per cent) also recorded rises in May, in seasonally adjusted terms.
There were falls in South Australia (-0.6 per cent), Tasmania (minus one per cent) and the ACT (down 0.1 per cent).
The trend estimate for Australian retail turnover rose 0.4 per cent in May 2012 recording its strongest rise in dollar terms since June 2010. This follows a rise of 0.4 per cent in April 2012 and a rise of 0.4 per cent in March 2012.
