Imagine coming into your store every day and being surrounded by happy, energetic and positive employees.  How would that make you feel? Imagine  your customers engaging with your enthusiastic employees all the time. Close your eyes and imagine how your customers would feel. Would they spend money in your store? Would they come back again? Would they tell other people about your store?

To discover whether you have an employee issue, as soon as possible take some time,  look closely at your employees, and ask yourself these questions:

  • Are they smiling or frowning?
  • Do they move quickly with purpose or slowly?
  • Are their shoulders pulled back and chins up or are they slouching?
  • Do your employees approach you most of the time or do you go to them?
  • Do they keep talking when you are in the vicinity?
  • Can you remember the last time you heard your employees laughing?
  • Is your business giving you the results you want?
  • Do you have a high level of absenteeism?
  • Is your employee retention a problem?
  • How do you feel about each individual employee working for you?

A lot of managers and retail owners believe that great employees are as rare as diamonds.  The reality is very different.

Most employees, given the right set of circumstances will consistently perform at a very high level. If they aren’t performing to your expectations….. love them.

Many managers spend too much time and money trying to make their employees do more, when all they need to do is ….. love them.

For some of you this concept may sound too radical and even ridiculous. My question to you is ” how is what you have been doing working for you”?

I have seen a lot of different methods used to improve the performance of employees.

  • Threats and fear work for a while and then will stop working
  • Extra training will work for a while.
  • More money works for some
  • Time off works for others
  • Games and competitions makes a difference to a few
  • Micromanagement make a small difference until you stop micromanaging
  • Change of duties or location will work occasionally
  • Gifts and bonuses can turn some people on

However, there is only one way to permanently turn ordinary employees into extraordinary, keep them performing at a high level and retain them in your business.  Love them!

When you make the decision to love your employees, now and forever, your rewards will overflow.
